Dry Rot Sepular Lacrymans
South England If you have poorly ventilated areas in
your home they are more than likely to experience dry rot rather than
wet rot. The most common areas for dry rot accumulation are suspended
wooden floors, cellar timbers, structural timbers with a leak and the
backs of skirting boards. It is quite opposite to wet rot as it
prefers the timber to be at 20% moisture only and never effects wood
outside.
Although this type of rot is not as
common as wet rot it is twice as damaging and can cause more problems
later on with your timber if not treated properly the first time
round. The dry rot itself is a fungus which can spread through all of
the timber in your home if infected. Once it has taken hold of the
wood and damaged it the rot then grows cottony threads which grow and
move to source fresh wood to infect. There is nothing stopping these
threads as they can break through plaster, mortar and even bricks and
even go from one house to the next if left for a long time.
To find the source of your dry rot it
is often very difficult as it can be hidden behind other forms of
structure and timber. However you will be able to smell the rot in
the area as it is a fungus and will smell musty like a mushroom. The
wood itself will also give away signals as it is spongey and some
growths may be visible. If you leave the rot for a long time it can
form flat pancake shapes that are rusty to look at and are the main
tell-tale sign for deep dry rot.
